PLACEMENT TEST “Do I Have To Take This Test?”
Rhetoric If you haven't taken any college-level composition course, we will use your best ACT English, SAT Critical Reading, or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score unless your letter of admission states that you must take the English as a Second Language Placement Test (the EPT). If you have taken a college-level composition course, then your Rhetoric placement is based on your previously taken, transferable English courses. You must enroll in RHET 233 if you have earned at least one hour of transferable credit for academic writing but not enough to fulfill the Composition I requirement.
Math (ALEKS PPL) Only if you plan to enroll in a Calculus I or a lower-level math class
Chemistry Only if you studied chemistry in high school credit, you have not earned college credit in chemistry, and you plan to take chemistry at Illinois. Check your handbook.
Physics Only if you are required to take PHYS 211. Check your handbook.
Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) No. However, if you are thinking of taking MCB courses (e.g., possibly going into pre-med), you are strongly encouraged to take this test even if you have AP Biology or IB Biology credit.
English as a Second
Language
Only if your letter of admission states this.
Language Other
Than English (LOTE)
Only if you studied a LOTE in high school, you have not earned college credit in the LOTE, and you plan to take courses in that same LOTE at Illinois. The College of Engineering requires that its students successfully complete the third level of a LOTE to fulfill the General Education language requirement. Check your handbook.

Math placement testing will open on April 16, 2018 for Fall course enrollment.

Science and LOTE placement testing will open on May 1, 2018 for Fall course enrollment.
