English as a Second Language

Placement into the ESL courses is based on results from both parts of the ESL Placement Test (known as "the EPT"), oral and written. Cutoff scores and placement messages are derived in collaboration with the Linguistics Department and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2015, Fall 2015, or Spring 2016.

A NOTE TO ESL STUDENTS: If you are required to take the EPT, this will be stated in your "Notice of Admission" from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Even if you are not required to take the EPT, you may still take the test and enroll in the recommended ESL courses if you wish to do so. Successful completion of the ESL 111-112 sequence, or successful completion of ESL 115, fulfills the Composition I General Education requirement just like RHET 101-102 or RHET 105.

The EPT does not award proficiency credit. Click here to learn more about the test.
