Advanced Placement Program

Effective for incoming undergraduate students enrolling in the Summer 2016 or Fall 2016 term:

Advanced Placement Test scores of three (3) and higher will be accepted to satisfy degree requirements in compliance with the amendment to the State of Illinois “College and Career Success for All Students” Act. Depending on the exam and the score, the credit earned will be translated either as elective credit or as specific course credit. Click here for our FAQ. Specific information on policies will be posted here soon.

Proficiency credit is awarded on the basis of sufficiently high scores on 33 AP exams and is subject to change upon annual review. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2015, Fall 2015, or Spring 2016.

The University of Illinois recognizes the value of the Advanced Placement (AP) Program and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Students should be aware that there are times when it is in their best interest to take the course that corresponds to the AP or IB credit instead of accepting the test-based credit so as to be better prepared for the rigors of the subsequent course in the sequence. Students are able to consult with their academic advisors during registration in order to determine what will be most appropriate for their individual plan of study.

New undergraduate students who barely miss earning AP proficiency credit and who have not already earned college-level credit in the subject are allowed to take a departmental proficiency exam in math, science, and certain LOTEs if they wish to try to proficiency out of an introductory course.
