MATH PLACEMENT CUTOFF SCORES AND PLACEMENT MESSAGES FOR 2024-2025

The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign requires all incoming freshmen to take the ALEKS PPL(Placement, Preparation, and Learning Mathematics Assessment Exam) to assess students' mathematical knowledge for advising and course placement. ALEKS PPL uses adaptive, open-response questioning to rapidly and accurately assess a student in 30 questions or less. Students are advised and placed into an Illinois math course, and given the opportunity to improve their placement through targeted learning with up to 12-months of access to the Preparation and Learning Modules. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or Spring 2025.

All new freshmen are required to take the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam prior to registration. There are no exceptions, even I you are expecting AP or IB course proficiency credit.

All transfer students who intend to enroll in a Calculus I or lower-level math class are also required to take the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam. If you are transferring to Illinois with math credit earned elsewhere, you should check with your college to verify what other math courses, if any, your program requires.

ALEKS PPL test scores expire in four months. This means that, the semester that immediately follows the date of your ALEKS PPL test, you must enroll in and complete the math course into which you place. Otherwise, you will need to take the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam again in order to obtain an updated course placement. Learn more about mathematics assessment.

The ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam does not award academic credit. If you wish to take a math proficiency exam, check the schedule, as they are offered at various times throughout the year.

Questions? Contact the Mathematics Department during business hours.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM (AP) CUTOFF SCORES, PLACEMENT MESSAGES, AND CREDIT POLICIES FOR 2024-2025

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is committed to supporting our incoming students and ensuring that they have a smooth transition to their higher education studies. Please be sure to tell your academic advisor during Summer Registration that you have taken AP exams, as the College Board has announced there will be a delay in sending scores to institutions. The credit policies below apply to all students entering Illinois in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or Spring 2025. Only scores resulting in credit are shown.

If you do not see the new policies for 2024-2025, please clear out your cache and refresh your browser.

For descriptions of the courses listed in the table below, please see the Courses of Instruction section in the Academic Catalog.
Course numbers listed as 1 - - or 2 - - are considered elective credit within the stated subject area. This is because our campus does not have an equivalent course that corresponds to the AP course. Students can apply elective credit towards their graduation requirements. Students should consult with their academic advisor to determine how this test-based credit may best be used to meet their specific curriculum and program requirements.

The University of Illinois recognizes the value of the Advanced Placement (AP) Program and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Students should be aware that there are times when it is in their best interest to take the course that corresponds to the AP or IB credit instead of accepting the test-based credit. You may be better prepared for the rigors of the subsequent course in the sequence if you decline this credit and take the course. Students are able to consult with their academic advisors during Registration in order to determine what will be most appropriate for their individual plan of study.

New undergraduate students who barely miss earning proficiency credit and who have not already earned college-level credit in the subject are allowed to take a departmental proficiency exam in math, science, and certain LOTEs if they wish to try to proficiency out of an introductory course.

Questions? Contact "Placement & Proficiency" staff by emailing pnp@illinois.edu or by calling 217-244-4437 during business hours.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) DIPLOMA PROGRAMME CUTOFF SCORES, PLACEMENT MESSAGES, AND CREDIT POLICES FOR 2024-2025

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is committed to supporting our incoming students and ensuring that they have a smooth transition to their higher education studies.

To view credit policies for any foreign language, scroll down to "Languages Other Than English"

Advanced Level Exams (A-Levels)

ADVANCED LEVEL EXAMS (A-LEVELS) CUTOFF SCORES, PLACEMENT MESSAGES, AND CREDIT POLICIES FOR 2024-2025

If you took the exam through Cambridge, email international-admissions@illinois.edu with your UIN, date of birth, candidate number, centre number and series of the exam. Examinations taken through another board need to be submitted via an approved vendor or mailed in.

Proficiency credit is awarded for most Advanced Level exams on the basis of sufficiently high scores (grades of C and higher) and is subject to change upon annual review. Please note that AS Levels are not the same as A Levels. Typically, the syllabus content for an AS Level course is half the content for an A Level course. Illinois does not accept AS Level test scores for either course placement or course proficiency credit. The A Level policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or Spring 2025.

If you take an equivalent course for part of the A Level at Illinois, only partial credit will be awarded. All grades are posted as "Credit." New undergraduate students who have not already earned college-level credit in a particular subject are allowed to take the departmental proficiency exam if they wish to try to proficiency out of an introductory course.

Questions? Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. All A Level credit is processed through Undergraduate Admissions. Be sure to ask to speak to an international admissions specialist.
