MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT CUTOFF SCORES AND PLACEMENT MESSAGES FOR 2010-2011
Placement into UIUC math courses is based on the student's ALEKS Math exam score. All new freshmen enrolling during the 2009-2010 academic year are required to take this placement exam prior to registration. It is administered online through Aleks.com.
Transfer students who intend to enroll in a Calculus I or lower-level math class are also required to take the ALEKS Math placement exam.
Cutoff scores and course placement recommendations are derived in collaboration with the Mathematics Department and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering UIUC in Summer 2010, Fall 2010, or Spring 2011.

Placement into the introductory Chemistry courses is based on a combination of the student's highest ACT (or SAT) Math score and the student's score on the UIUC Chemistry Placement Exam. Cutoff scores and placement recommendations are derived in collaboration with the Chemistry Department and are reviewed annually. The polices below apply to all students entering UIUC in Summer 2010, Fall 2010, or Spring 2011.
The online Chemistry Placement Exam does not award proficiency credit.

NOTE TO NON-SCIENCE MAJORS
CHEM 108 ("Chemistry, Everyday Phenomena") is offered in the spring as a course that fulfills the General Education physical science requirement. If interested, please discuss this option with your academic advisor during Summer Registration.

Proficiency credit is awarded on the basis of sufficiently high scores from 33 AP exams and is subject to change upon annual review. The policies below apply to all students entering UIUC in Summer 2010, Fall 2010, or Spring 2011.
Please note that May 2009 will be the last year that the Computer Science AB, French Literature, Italian, and Latin Literature exams will be offered.
The university of Illinois recognizes the value of the Advanced Placement (AP) Program and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. However, students should be aware that there are times when it is in the student's best interest to take the UIUC course that corresponds to the AP or IB credit instead of accepting the test-based credit, so as to be better prepared for the rigors of the subsequent course in the sequence. Students are able to consult with their academic advisors during Summer Registration in order to determine what will be most appropriate for their individual plan of study.
New undergraduate students who have not already earned college-level credit in the subject are allowed to take a UIUC departmental proficiency exam in math, biology, chemistry, physics, French, German, or Spanish if they wish to try to proficiency out of an introductory course.
