ProctorU

ProctorU is an online proctoring service that allows students to take exams online while ensuring the integrity of the exam for the institution. The service uses proctors who monitor exam takers in three ways. Our campus primarily uses Record+, an automated tool described below; however, some programs, placement tests or courses (particularly for graduate students) may use the other two services, Live+ or Review+, which involve live proctors.

Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows undergraduate students to take exams online in Canvas and Moodle LTI courses embedded in Canvas without an instructor present by having students use Guardian Browser. Record+ authenticates student identity, as well as monitors and records the test-taker's computer screen, microphone input and webcam video. There is typically no fee for undergraduate students to use Record+.

Note: If you are taking a course that offers a Record+ option, this will be announced in your course syllabus or site.

Proctors monitor exam takers by:

1. Authenticating the test taker’s identity to ensure that the person being monitored is the correct student.
2. Observing the test taker via a webcam.
3. Recording the test taker's screen in real time so that AI and then live proctors can review everything the student did both at the location and on screen. If the review flags any questionable behavior, the instructor is notified. The instructor has the final determination as to whether any violation of academic integrity has occurred.

It is recommended that ProctorU only be used for high stakes assessments, such as midterm, finals and other exams rather than lower stakes quizzes.

Technical Requirements

Operating System and Hardware

• OSX or Windows computer matching the posted requirements.

Browser Requirements

• Either Guardian Browser (for OSX and Windows computers) or Chrome with the Guardian browser extension (for Chromebooks) is required.

Other Technical Specifications

• Webcam with 640x480 video pixel resolution.
• Microphone connected to the computer (we recommend having a webcam that has a built-in microphone).
• Reliable high speed Internet connection (minimum 768 Kbps download speed /128 upload speed Kbps).
• Authority to allow remote access to your computer and screen by one of our proctors.
