Testing in Less Commonly Studied Languages

The purpose of placement testing is to identify which Illinois course is most appropriate for you so that you can pick up your studies where you left off. Placement testing is NOT NECESSARY if you have never studied the language. If you want to begin studying a new language, you can simply enroll in its "Elementary I" course.

The purpose of proficiency testing is usually to try to fulfill the General Education language requirement. Most of the language proficiency exams do not award academic credit.

Placement testing and proficiency testing in a less commonly studied language are carried out by the department that offers the language, usually at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. The department decides the date and time of the test, the manner in which testing is conducted, and the grading plan. The department also determines how much academic credit, if any, your performance earns. Consult with the language department or with your academic advisor to find out how your academic record will be affected.

Please be aware that a less commonly studied language MIGHT NOT BE OFFERED every semester. Just as course availability depends on instructor availability, placement testing and proficiency testing also depend on the availability of an instructor who is qualified to assess your four language skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. If testing is not available when you wish to test, please check with the department that is responsible for the language to see what your options are.

A fee may be charged to defray the cost of administering and grading a proficiency exam. The student is responsible for paying any fees that are charged.

IF YOUR LANGUAGE IS NOT LISTED ABOVE

For the purpose of fulfilling the Gen Ed language requirement, we accept test results from the following three institutions. No academic credit is awarded. Please note that you are responsible for making arrangements and for paying all proctoring and testing fees. You should plan on taking the exam during Fall or Spring semester, as faculty are not usually available during the Summer session to administer language tests.

  • New York University School of Professional Studies. NYU offers language proficiency testing in over 25 languages. You must register for the 16-point version of the exam of the language that you wish to be tested in. The 16-point exam is the 12-point exam plus the one-page essay that you write for the 4-point exam. NYU requires that you pay by credit card when you register. Test results must be sent to: Robert Steltman, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Administration, 2002 Lincoln Hall, 702 South Wright Street, Urbana IL 61801. PHONE 217-244-6877. EMAIL steltman@illinois.edu
  • University of Pennsylvania Language Center. U-Penn offers language proficiency testing in 48 languages. Please email Lada Vassilieva before filling out the registration form to ask whether it is possible for you to take a U-Penn proficiency test in the language that you desire. If she confirms that a professor is available to test you, then when filling out their registration form, under "Name of Academic Advisor" put "Julie Fredenburg" (do not type in your actual advisor's name) and for her email address, put "julesf61@illinois.edu". Under "Address Where Test Results Should Be Sent," put: Robert Steltman, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Administration, 2002 Lincoln Hall, 702 South Wright Street, Urbana IL 61801. PHONE 217-244-6877. EMAIL steltman@illinois.edu. To schedule your proficiency test after you have registered with U-Penn, contact the UIUC Testing Center at https://testingcenter.illinois.edu/
  • Brigham Young University. BYU offers language proficiency testing in over 50 languages, many of which are done online, but their tests assess only through the third level of language study. Currently, most programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and some programs in the College of Fine and Applied Arts require that you demonstrate proficiency through the fourth level. If you need to demonstrate fourth-level proficiency or higher, you cannot take a BYU language test. When filling out BYU's registration form, you'll notice that UIUC is not included in their drop-down menu. Please select "Other" and then indicate that the results be sent to: Robert Steltman, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Administration, 2002 Lincoln Hall, 702 South Wright Street, Urbana IL 61801. PHONE 217-244-6877. EMAIL steltman@illinois.edu. For your proctor, you can either use the UIUC Testing Center proctor Testing Center Coordinator or you can choose BYU's automated Proctor360.

Feel free to contact PNP if you have any questions about testing in a less commonly studied language.
