Placement into the Rhetoric courses is based on the student’s highest ACT English + ACT Reading sum or highest SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing ("EBRW") score. Please note that we do not superscore the ACT (i.e., we sum your English and Reading subscores from the same test date. We do not take your highest English subscore from all the dates that you took the ACT and add it to your highest Reading subscore from all the dates that you took the ACT). Cutoff scores, placement recommendations, and proficiency credit policies are derived in collaboration with the Undergraduate Rhetoric Program in the Department of English and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020.
ATTENTION Transfer Students: If you have earned at least one hour of college-level composition credit in an academic writing course but not enough credit to fulfill the General Education 'Composition I' requirement, and if you are not required to take the EPT, you have the option of enrolling in RHET 233. Successfully completing RHET 233 satisfies both your 'Composition I' requirement and your 'Advanced Composition' requirement. Please discuss course enrollment options with your academic advisor.
