ESL Placement

Cutoff Scores and Placement Messages for 2020-2021

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will inform you whether you must take the English Placement Test. The EPT consists of two parts:

  • The Written EPT places a student into an academic research-and-writing course that will fulfill the 'Composition I' requirement.
  • The Oral EPT places a student into an oral communication course if the student does not already have a TOEFL Speaking score or IELTS Speaking score.

Cutoff scores and placement messages are derived in collaboration with the Linguistics Department and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021. Learn more about the EPT.
