Rhetoric Placement

Cutoff Scores, Placement Messages, and Credit Policies for 2022-2023

Placement into the Rhetoric courses is based on the student's highest official ACT English score or highest official SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing ("EBRW") score if submitted during the application process. Self-reported scores serve for preliminary placement only. Cutoff scores, placement recommendations, and proficiency credit policies are derived in collaboration with the Undergraduate Rhetoric Program in the Department of English and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Spring 2023.

  • Students who took the ACT or SAT but who chose not to submit ACT/SAT scores with their application materials will be placed into a Rhetoric class based on a review of their high school academic record. They are invited to complete the Rhetoric Placement Questionnaire and discuss their 'Composition I' course enrollment options with a staff member of the Rhetoric Department prior to their Summer Registration academic advising appointment.
  • Students who did not take the ACT or SAT must take the Rhetoric Placement Questionnaire and discuss their 'Composition I' course enrollment options with a staff member of the Rhetoric Department prior to their Summer Registration academic advising appointment.

ATTENTION Transfer Students: If you have earned partial college-level composition credit in an academic writing course but not enough credit to fulfill the General Education 'Composition I' requirement, and if you are not required to take the EPT, you have the option of enrolling in RHET 233. Successfully completing RHET 233 satisfies both your 'Composition I' requirement and your 'Advanced Composition' requirement. Please discuss course enrollment options with your academic advisor.
