Placement into the German courses is based on the student's score on the German Placement Exam. Cutoff scores and placement recommendations are derived in collaboration with the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2023, Fall 2023, or Spring 2024.

The online German Placement Test does not award academic credit. Students who do well on the placement test (placing into fourth level or higher) are encouraged to contact the Department to schedule a time to take the departmental proficiency exam.
