PLACEMENT TESTING FOR 2018-2019 WILL OPEN ON MAY 1, 2018.
Illinois offers a variety of introductory-level courses, even within the same subject, and so the purpose of placement testing is to determine what your knowledge and skills are in a subject so we can recommend an appropriate first course for you. If you score high on a placement test, you will qualify for the departmental proficiency test. You are not required to take any proficiency test, but it is an option to consider. Click on "Proficiency Testing" to the left for more information.
Please be sure to inform the Office of Undergraduate Admissions that you accept Illinois' offer of admission. Your “Acceptance of Admission” must be officially processed before you can be registered to take the online placement exams.
You also will need to have claimed your NetID and set your NetID password. If you can't remember what password you created, please contact Campus Technology Services to re-set it.
You should complete all of your placement exams at least two weeks prior to your Registration/Advising appointment. If you wait until the last minute, your test results might not be available for you and your academic advisor. In that case, you might not be able to register for the classes you’d like to enroll in.
Online placement testing is available in math, chemistry, molecular & cellular biology, physics, and four languages other than English (French, German, Latin, and Spanish). On-campus placement testing is offered for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. To test in a less commonly studied language, you need to contact the professor in charge of teaching the language.
All incoming freshmen are required to take the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam, even if you have earned credit for AP Calculus or IB Math. If you are wondering which other placement exams you must take, this will depend on several factors including your academic background, the College you are going into, and any transferable credit you earned prior to enrolling at Illinois.
Only the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam can be taken more than once. Your math score will appear on the screen when you complete the exam so that you can decide whether you are satisfied with the result or whether you want to take the test again to try to earn a higher placement. Your ALEKS PPL Placement Pie will break down your test results into your unique strengths and weaknesses in math, and then you can choose which Module you wish to study, if any. ALEKS PPL includes 6 months’ access to the Prep and Learning Module. It is strongly recommended that you study before re-taking the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Exam.
Each of the science and LOTE placement exams can be taken only once. You will see your course placement as soon as you complete the exam. Sometimes you might qualify for more than one course, which is why it is very important that you meet with your academic advisor to discuss your placement test results and your course enrollment options. Your advisor will make sure you strike the right balance towards meeting the course requirements of your program, your College, and the University.
Remember, if you never studied the subject, you do NOT need to take its placement test.
