French Placement


FRENCH PLACEMENT

CUTOFF SCORES AND PLACEMENT MESSAGES FOR 2025-2026

Placement into the French courses is based on the student's score on the French Placement Exam. Cutoff scores and placement messages are derived in collaboration with the French Department and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2025, Fall 2025, or Spring 2026.

The online French Placement Test does not award academic credit. Students who do well on the placement test (placing into fourth level or higher) are invited to attempt the French Proficiency Exam, which is offered at the beginning of each Fall or Spring semester.

1 If you do not already have college-level credit for FR 104 or higher, you may take the French Proficiency Exam in August 2025 or January 2026 prior to enrolling in a French course.
