If a video is to be made public, it must be transcribed and captioned. This is not at our request, it is required by law and is University of Illinois policy. Laws are in place to make media as accessible as possible. Please see the helpful links on accessibility below:

TRANSCRIBING AND CAPTIONING MEDIA
Event Recording Services at CITL works with an outside trusted vendor (Automatic Sync) to provide T/C services. This is currently billed at the rate off $2.50 per minute, but this rate is subject to change. No overhead for this service is charged by CITL. The fee for this service is added to your invoice upon completion of recording and captioning services.
TRANSCRIBING AND CAPTIONING RESOURCES
There are other captioning services available and we are happy to discuss these options with you. Here are a few that we regularly mention to our clients:
- DRES - You may also choose to work with DRES (Disability Resources and Educational Services at the UIUC campus). You will find their information here: http://www.disability.illinois.edu/. Currently, their turnaround time is longer and they are more expensive then Automatic Sync (but this is subject to change).
- DIY - Create captions yourself or hire an academic or student hourly to produce them. This will probably be more expensive than $2.50 per minute, depending on what you pay student workers. Most likely, they will also have to learn how to caption, which will add to the processing time.
- YouTube - Upload the video to YouTube and use their automatic captioning service. These are usually not very accurate, so you will probably have to revise them. This workflow, however, is typically faster then creating captions from scratch.
TRANSCRIBING AND CAPTIONING ASSISTANCE
Ultimately, how you choose to caption your media content is up to you. CITL’s Event Recording Services always works with clients to make sure they have the information and resources necessary to make their media as accessible as possible.
