The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) invites applications for an Assistant Instructional Designer. Working in an exciting, fast-paced environment, the Assistant Instructional Designer works closely with Instructional Designers (IDs) in developing and supporting online courses. This role is also responsible for staying current with, and advising on, campus-supported and other potential educational technologies. Team collaboration, strong work ethic, quality of work, and continual improvement are just a few of the values the Instructional Design department espouses. The mission of CITL is to provide leadership for reflective and responsive teaching, educational innovation, and professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with instructors and IDs to prepare their fully-developed online courses to be offered again.

  • Request and populate course sections within the learning management system and update content as needed
  • Communicate with instructors to ensure accuracy of information
  • Support faculty on technical issues while their courses are running

Provide developmental assistance for course projects.

  • Create and update content within learning management systems
  • Provide pedagogical input on course elements (e.g., reviewing module learning objectives, estimating student effort, reviewing quiz feedback)
  • Provide project management support, tracking status of various assets and collaborating with other team members
  • Liaise with quality control and assurance staff to correct errors found in online courses

Support the operations and continual improvement of the department.

  • Meet with team members to solve problems and plan upcoming work
  • Serve on internal committees to improve the team infrastructure (e.g. enhancing templates, expanding documentation, recommending new technologies)
  • Promote a positive work environment for all team members

Provide training and consultations to Illinois faculty and CITL colleagues; supervise interns.

  • Serve as the team’s point-person on assigned technologies by deeply understanding the technology and, where applicable, administering the service
  • Train, supervise, and delegate tasks to hourly staff, ensuring the quality and timely delivery of their work
  • Advise on suitability and best practices in the application of education technologies

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in field related to the position.
  • 1 year of experience developing educational web-based materials.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a teaching/learning-related discipline.
  • Experience working in Higher Education
  • Experience developing content within Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard and Moodle
  • Experience working with faculty in a role other than as a student
  • Experience implementing Collaborate or other web conferencing systems
  • Experience taking a fully-online course as a student

Highly successful candidates will have:

  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to function in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong time-management skills including the ability to meet deadlines in a timely fashion

Successful candidates will have:

  • Proficiency with multimedia-oriented tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, and / Camtasia
  • Proficiency with HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, pedagogy, and instructional systems design
  • Knowledge of best practice in standards-compliant responsive web design, accessibility, user-experience design, information architecture, and graphic design

Salary and Appointment Information:

This is a full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis, reporting to an Instructional Design Coordinator within the Instructional Design department of CITL.  The expected start date is as soon as possible after August 19, 2019.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
