One book, eight friends, and infinite possibilities!
The CITL Faculty Book Club will kick off the 2023-24 Academic Year with a new book and a new format.
This fall, we will meet online from 11:30 am to 1 pm on the following Thursdays: Sept. 14 and 28, and October 12 and 26. If you are a UIUC faculty member or post-doc with teaching responsibilities who would like to join our group, please register here.
Our book selection is Small Teaching Online: Applying Learning Science in Online Classes (Darby & Lang, 2019)
“It’s a great way to connect with colleagues from different disciplines who are curious about the same topics that interest you,” said David Favre, a Teaching & Learning Specialist at CITL and the book club’s facilitator.
The concept of small teaching is simple: small and strategic changes have enormous power to improve student learning. Instructors face unique and specific challenges when teaching an online course. This book offers small teaching strategies that will positively impact the online classroom.
This book outlines practical and feasible applications of theoretical principles to help your online students learn. It includes current best practices around educational technologies, strategies to build community and collaboration, and minor changes you can make in your online teaching practice, small but impactful adjustments that result in significant learning gains.
Topics presented in this book address all major components of UIUC’s definition and assessment of teaching excellence and are essential for instructors who will teach online.
Joining our book club has many benefits:
- Creating new collegial friendships
- Learning from each other’s experiences and points of view
- Using a free version of the book from our UIUC Library
- Earning an Accredible badge that can be displayed on LinkedIn
- Suggesting ideas for our next book
If you are a faculty member at UIUC or a post-doc with teaching responsibilities, please consider joining!
Please check your calendar to determine if you can commit to attending all of our meetings from 11:30 am to 1 pm on the following Thursdays: Sept. 14 and 28 and Oct. 12 and 26 (2023).
