Technology Panel Conversation Casts a Wide Net
Technology Services Interim CIO, Scott Genung, and Interim Deputy CIO for IT Operations, Drew MacGregor were featured guests during the last Art of Teaching Seminar on May 5. The wide-ranging conversation included a closer look at the new Canvas learning management system, updates on email scams and data security, what we gained and lost with Zoom, and how emerging technologies such as AR, VR, digital twins, and deep fakes are making their way into higher education. Channel your inner geek and spend some time with these smart and interesting leaders at the helm of campus technologies. The Art of Teaching Lunchtime Seminar Series will resume in Fall when we’ll spotlight faculty research on teaching and learning. Find links to all presenter information at the website.
CITL Summer Course Design Series Begins June 14
Lucas Anderson and the CITL Grad Affiliates will be running one of their favorite events of the year: the summer workshop series on course design. Learn about backward course design, and then start designing your course through a series of 8 workshops in which you will consider your audience, craft good learning objectives, choose well-aligned assignments, figure out how to engage your students, and start developing course policies and a syllabus. All while working with a great group of fellow teachers! You don’t have to commit to the whole series, but the more you attend, the more you take away. We are piloting a hybrid approach, where you get to decide whether to attend workshops in person or online via Zoom. The sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 14 through July 7. Click here to register for any or all course design sessions.

URAP is a valuable professional development opportunity during which you will gain hands-on experience mentoring undergraduate researchers. Graduate students and postdocs in any field are welcome to apply. An information session will be held on May 17 at noon. Applications are due June 15. Learn more about the program here.
Volunteers Needed for the August 2022 Graduate Academy for College Teaching
We’re looking for experienced instructors to teach at the August 2022 Graduate Academy for College Teaching, the campuswide training program for new TAs. A mix of online and face-to-face sessions takes place August 16-17, with Microteaching on August 18-19.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Facilitate Microteaching sessions. Help new TAs start strong by offering feedback on short mock lessons and running a short discussion. Training is provided. You would need to be on campus on August 18 or available via Zoom on August 19.
- Run a small group session. We are in special need of Engineering TAs. We provide a lesson plan and training, and you could work with a partner. You would need to be on campus on August 16.
- Run a concurrent session. Pitch a teaching topic you think new TAs would be interested in. You would need to be on campus or available via Zoom on August 16 or 17.
Please contact Lucas Anderson at lander23@illinois.edu for more information or respond to our call for presenters to volunteer.
