AI in Higher Ed: How to Thoughtfully Integrate Technology for Student Success

We are thrilled to highlight this recent Community of Practice discussion with Podium Education featuring Orly Bartour (Barad), VP of Learning Experience, and Michel Bellini, Director at the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Here are key takeaways that were discussed on how to thoughtfully integrate generative AI into the undergraduate journey, balancing innovation with student success.

  • AI expands access but doesn’t replace skills. Tools like ChatGPT can help students learn, but faculty play a key role in making sure real understanding, not shortcuts, happens.
  • Human skills are still essential. Critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving aren’t replaced by AI, they’re strengthened by it.
  • Context matters. Different disciplines will adopt AI at different speeds, but all can benefit from thoughtful, ethical use.

Fall into AI Kick-Off Event: AI Under the Hood

To kick-off the Fall into AI at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, CITL’s Przemek Bosak will host a hybrid presentation on Wednesday, October 1 at 1 pm CST in the Innovation Studio (Armory room 172) and on Zoom. During this presentation, Przemek will peek under the hood of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to explore the modern exponent of Machine Learning (ML) and provide an overview of the future of Artificial Intelligence. The following foundational questions will be addressed: How does AI work? What does it do well?  What are the processes behind it? No registration required.

Are You Using AI in Your Teaching or Research?

Following the success of our Summer of AI programming, CITL is looking for presenters and panelists for our Fall and Spring speaker series. We’re particularly interested in questions like: How is AI affecting creativity and design? Where is AI enhancing research (or getting in the way)? And how are we helping students navigate AI in ways that do not compromise their learning, but helps them prepare for future careers?

If you are interested in offering a solo presentation or being part of a discussion panel, please send a short note to citl-info@illinois.edu. And, if you’d like to learn more about generative AI, subscribe to our GenAI Newsletter.

Register Now for the Fall 2025 MCOT Cohort

CITL's Master Course in Online Teaching (MCOT) is a deep-dive into online teaching strategies that goes beyond earlier summer teaching institutes. Prior participation in an instructional development series is not required, but professional experience with university-level instruction is strongly encouraged. MCOT provides an opportunity for social learning and networking with a supportive interdisciplinary learning community.

The MCOT Canvas Course opens on Thursday, October 9, 2025, and our synchronous meetings occur at 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. on the following four Thursdays - October 23, October 30, November 6, and November 13. Certificates will be presented to those who complete all course requirements. Register here to join the fall 2025 cohort.

Faculty Workshop Series on Teaching and Learning

Join us on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Siebel Center for Design to reflect and advance your teaching. We’ll balance principle and practice, with opportunities to engage and collaborate with fellow instructors across campus. On October 1, we’ll dive into strategies for assessing student learning; on October 8, we’ll focus on best practices for peer observation; and on October 15, we’ll explore how to design effective syllabi that support both teaching and students’ learning. This workshop series offers a supportive community where you can explore evolving teaching practices, reflect on your pedagogy, and prepare for tenure and promotion. Participation counts toward earning various CITL teaching certificates, recognizing your commitment to teaching excellence.

Discover the Innovation Studio!

Visit the Innovation Studio (armory 172) during Open Hours every Monday and Tuesday from noon - 4 p.m. Drop in to explore and experiment with generative AI, 3D printing, virtual reality, laser cutting, and more. All activities are free and open to everyone—no prior experience required.

Love innovation? Interested in visiting with your class? Course and group visits are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. To schedule, simply fill out this contact form.

Come see what’s possible in teaching, learning, and innovation!

UDL vs. Accessibility: What's the Difference and How Do They Work Together?

By Marc Thompson (CITL)

In the context of teaching and learning, "accessibility" and "Universal Design for Learning (UDL)" have become key concepts for creating effective and inclusive learning environments. While often used in the same conversation, these two frameworks have distinct goals and applications. Understanding their unique roles and how they intersect is essential for educators, instructional designers, and eLearning professionals. To learn more about where these frameworks intersect, differ, and how they can work together synergistically, see the full article.
