We are happy to announce that Bennett Goldberg and Sarah Hokanson, PIs of the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project (ISTP) will be at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on January 15, 2025 to lead a 6-hour workshop for members of the Illinois community in becoming inclusive teaching learning community facilitators.
The ISTP facilitator training is designed for faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff who wish to lead an inclusive teaching learning community using the ISTP course content. ISTP learning communities provide an opportunity to dig deeper into course content, adapt the activities to your local context, and develop cohorts of participants to carry inclusive teaching forward. To date, 513 facilitators at 164 institutions have been trained and lead 132 learning communities with 1004 participants.
During the facilitator workshop, participants will develop inclusive, multipartial facilitation skills and techniques that encourage connection, drive engagement, hold space for all voices, and effectively navigate discussions with productive discomfort. ISTP facilitation is designed around a co-facilitation model, so teams of 2 or 3 are strongly encouraged.
Although the course was designed with STEM instruction in mind, all educators from all areas are encouraged to participate in the training, so feel free to forward this opportunity to colleagues who might also be interested. Growing cohorts of learning community facilitators at the local level have proven to be very effective for engaging in inclusive teaching.
More information about the opportunity is available on our website. The following publications include additional details about the Inclusive STEM Project and its outcomes to date:
