Rhetoric Placement

Cutoff Scores, Placement Messages, and Credit Policies for 2020-2021

Placement into the Rhetoric courses is based on the student's highest official ACT English score or highest official SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing ("EBRW") score. Cutoff scores, placement recommendations, and proficiency credit policies are derived in collaboration with the Undergraduate Rhetoric Program in the Department of English and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021.

ATTENTION Transfer Students: If you have earned at least one hour of college-level composition credit in an academic writing course but not enough credit to fulfill the General Education 'Composition I' requirement, and if you are not required to take the EPT, you have the option of enrolling in RHET 233. Successfully completing RHET 233 satisfies both your 'Composition I' requirement and your 'Advanced Composition' requirement. Please discuss course enrollment options with your academic advisor.
