French Placement

Cutoff Scores and Placement Messages for 2022-2023

Placement into the French courses is based on the student's score on the French Placement Exam. Cutoff scores and placement messages are derived in collaboration with the French Department and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Spring 2023.

The online French Placement Test does not award academic credit. Students who do well on the placement test (placing into fourth level or higher) are invited to attempt the French Proficiency Exam, which is offered at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester.

26 - 43Placed into FR 102
44 - 57Placed into FR 103 or, if majoring or minoring in French, placed into FR 133
58 - 75Placed into FR 1041 or, if majoring or minoring in French, placed into FR 134
76 - 89Placed into FR 205 or FR 207; consult with the French Department's Undergraduate Advisor about other 200-level courses.1
1 If you do not already have college-level credit for FR 104 or higher, you may take the French Proficiency Exam in August 2022 or January 2023 prior to enrolling in a French course.
